Peter Lovesey was born at home in an urban semi-detached house in Middlesex, England in 1936, with
instruments, as his mother used to say, and she did not mean with an orchestra playing. Although
I’m sure there was noise.
After Hampton Grammar school he went to Reading University to study Fine Art, although he soon
switched courses to study English. At Reading he also met his wife-to-be, Jackie Lewis, known as
Jax.
Then one day in 1969 he spotted an advert for a FIRST CRIME NOVEL competition with a prize of
1000 pounds. It was too tempting to ignore, and encouraged by Jax and using his own knowledge of
obscure Victorian athletics, he submitted and won with WOBBLE TO DEATH.
After that, he knuckled down to learn the tricks of the trade and, seven Victorian Crime novels later,
in 1975, he kissed farewell to teaching and took up writing full time.
